#21: A BIGGER FOOL
A court jester served in the king’s court for many years. One day, he told the king he was leaving. “Where are you going?” the king asked.
“I don’t know,” the jester replied. “Anyone leaving without knowing where he is going is a fool,” the king said. He took a ring, placed it on the jester’s finger, and said, “Wear this ring, and when you find a fool greater than you, give it to him.”
Many years passed. One day the jester heard that the king was gravely ill. He returned to the palace and found the king bedridden and dying. “Thank you for coming,” the king said, “I am glad to see you before I leave this world.”
The jester asked, “O king, do you know where you are going?” The king said, “I don’t know.” The jester took off the ring from his finger, and gave it to the king. “Anyone leaving without knowing where he is going is a fool,” he reminded the king, “I have followed your instructions, and found a fool greater than I.”
We decide on our destination before we set off on a journey. Yet, for many, setting off on the final journey, we are not sure where we are going. Jesus had gone on that journey, conquered death and returned. He is the best person to tell us about our final destination.
“Thomas said to him [Jesus], “Lord, we do not know where you are going. How can we know the way?” Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” John 14:5-6 ESV
