Memorable Lines from Movies, Big Story in Bible

#9 FROZEN
Letting It Go

Based on Hans Christian Andersen's The Snow Queen, the movie Frozen cast its magic on cinema-goers, its signature song ringing for weeks in their heads: “Let it go, Let it go, Can’t hold it anymore….” The song marks a pivotal moment in the fairy tale when Princess Elsa decides to abandon her fears and embrace her powers.

Sung by Idina Menzel, the voice of Elsa, it won “Best Original Song” at the 86th Academy Awards in 2014. Could its popular appeal reflect something deep in the hearts of us all, a universal fear of letting go? Could that be why thousands flock to watch the movie, an astounding success, grossing over US$1.2 billion worldwide.

Letting go is never easy. Once we take hold of something, or something takes hold of us, we find it hard to let it go. For Elsa, it was the fear of harming her sister Anna with her powers (as it happened accidentally in their childhood). Her past trauma took hold of her, and she struggled to free herself from it.

What freedom she felt when she finally let go of it! Disney pulls out all stops to celebrate her liberation, especially in the stage musical, with a dramatic dress change and special effects wizardry! When we let go, we don’t lose anything; we gain a lot more.

Big Story in Bible

Letting go is also the overarching theme of the Gospel. Jesus let go of the glories of heaven, and came to earth, born in an animal shed and laid in a feeding trough. He let go of his life, and died on a Roman cross, a sacrifice for the sins of humankind. He gave his life that we may be saved.

He calls on his followers to let go of their lives for him, “For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake and the gospel’s will save it.”Mark 8:35 ESV

None of us can follow Jesus if we are still holding on to our pride, our achievements, our possessions, and anything that holds us back from total commitment to him. One person who knew this well, and lived it, is Jim Elliot, the missionary-martyr whose words continue to challenge us: “He is no fool who gives what cannot keep, to gain what he cannot lose.”
