#28: GAMBLER’S CATCH
A gambler was walking home after losing almost all his money. The devil appeared to him with a challenge. “See that bridge over there,” he said, “Each time you cross it, the money you have will double.”
“What’s the catch?” the gambler asked suspiciously. “Nothing really,” the devil replied, “just give me $24 each time you crossed the bridge.”
The gambler did a quick calculation. He had $21 with him. One crossing would make $42, two $84, three $168, four $336, five $672. If he keeps crossing through the night, he would be a rich man by morning! And all he had to give was $24 each time.
“It’s a deal!” he told the devil.
Sure enough, when he got to the other side of the bridge, his $21 had doubled to $42. He gave the devil $24.
With the balance of $18, he crossed again, and it doubled to $36. He gave the devil $24, and was left with $12.
He crossed the third time, and the money doubled to $24. The devil took it, and vanished into the night laughing.
Never make a deal with the devil. He appeals to our lust and desires, but always exacts a high price. What he offers is never worth what he demands in return.
“Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. Resist him….” 1 Peter 5:8-9 ESV
