Psalm‬ ‭56‬:‭8‬ ‭ESV‬‬
GOD REMEMBERS OUR TEARS
“You have kept count of my tossings; put my tears in your bottle. Are they not in your book?”

I met someone who recently lost his young wife to cancer. He shared how reminders of her would hit him with “grief attacks” (much like panic attacks) and reduce him to uncontrollable tears.

In such grief, we wonder if God sees and understands. When King Hezekiah was stricken with a deadly illness, he cried to God in desperation. God assured him, "I have heard your prayer; I have seen your tears. Behold, I will heal you." (2 Kings 20:5)

Psalm 56 was written by David when he found himself in enemy’s territory among the Philistines (1 Samuel 21:10-15). He had fled to King Achish of Gath, seeking refuge from King Saul's pursuit. However, the servants of Achish recognised David. Fearing they might betray him to those after his life, he feigned madness, scratching at doors and foaming at his mouth.

Despite such desperate measures, David had no guarantee for his safety. Tossing in his sleep, tearful and fearful, he turned to God: “Then my enemies will turn back in the day when I call. This I know, that God is for me.” (v.9).

God not only sees our tears, He feels our pain, and He remembers. “Each tear entered in your ledger, each ache written in your book,” as paraphrased by The Message. God remembers till the end of time when He “will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.” Rev 21.4

God sees and remembers our tears.
