SERMON STORIES: LAUGH & LEARN
#34: HONEST AND CAMERA-SHY
A couple walked into a fast food restaurant and ordered dinner. They took their boxed meal and left. The manager realised to her horror that she had given them the box containing the day’s takings meant for the bank. She ran outside, in time to see them driving off.
A short while later, the couple returned. “We opened the box and found all this money,” the man said as he handed over the box, “Could we have the dinner we ordered?” The manager was relieved.
Then she had an idea. “You know, we don’t have many honest people like you nowadays,” she said, “Why don’t you both wait while I call the local newspapers to come, take your pictures and do a story of this?”
The man replied, “Just give us our dinner and we’ll be on our way.” The manager asked, “Are you camera shy?” “No,” the man replied, “I don’t think I want my wife to see me with this lady.”
Here we have someone who is honest about money but unfaithful about his marriage. Human nature is such that good and evil, virtue and vice, are mixed in us. As those created in God’s image, yet fallen in sin, none of us is so bad that we cannot be saved; yet none is so good that we do not need salvation.
“None is righteous, no, not one….”
“… but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”Romans 3:10; 5:8 ESV
