#18: I BAKED IT MYSELF
Susan offered to bake a cake for a charity fair. As she took it out of the oven, the cake’s centre collapsed. With no time to bake another, she stuck a roll of toilet paper into the cake and covered it with icing. It looked perfect.
As she rushed off to work, she told her daughter, “I am dropping the cake off at the fair. Please go when the fair opens and buy the cake.”
When she got home, her daughter told her, “I went to the fair when it opened but someone already bought the cake.” Susan was horrified. Whoever had bought the cake would have a shock of her life!
The next day Susan received an invitation to her neighbour’s birthday party. To her horror, she saw the cake she had baked. All the guests were admiring it, saying how beautiful it looked.
Susan wondered if she should confess and tell everyone the truth. But before she could do it, her neighbour took in all the praises, and proudly announced, “I am so glad you like the cake. I baked it myself.”
Human nature has a prideful side: taking credit when it’s not due. Also, not giving credit when it’s due. Beware lest such boasting lands us in trouble!
“We are not going too far in our boasting …. Neither do we go beyond our limits by boasting of work done by others.…” 2 Corinthians 10:14-15 NIV
