#15: SHOW HIM YOUR BADGE

A newly appointed sheriff took pride in his badge. During his rounds, he visited a cattle ranch. “I have come to inspect your property,” he announced.

“You’re welcome,” the ranch owner said, “but I would advise you not to go through the gate over there. It’s out of bounds.”

The sheriff flew into rage. “You can’t tell me where I can go, and where I can’t go,” he fumed. He pointed to his badge, his chest swelling, and declared, “You see this badge — it means I can go anywhere I want, and you can’t stop me.”

“Be my guest,” the owner replied, and stepped aside. The sheriff went straight for the gate, and before long, came face to face with a bull!

He turned and ran for his life, but could not find a way out. Round and round he ran with bull in pursuit. The owner stood outside the enclosure and shouted to the sheriff, “Show him your badge! Show him your badge!”

Pride can be petty, and even laughable. Some people are offended when their names are not mentioned in the acknowledgments, and upset because their status is not recognised and accorded high honour. They get angry and throw tantrums. Such haughtiness invites laughter, even from heaven.

“Why do the nations rage and the peoples plot in vain? … He who sits in the heavens laughs; the Lord holds them in derision.” Psalm 2:1, 4 ESV
