#17: SOMEONE UNDER THE BED
A man suffered from a phobia. “Someone is hiding under my bed,” he told his wife. He worried about it in the day, and had problem sleeping with the fear at night. His wife told him to see a psychiatrist.
“We need to talk about it,” the psychiatrist said, “Why don’t you come in next week? We will meet every week, and in 10 sessions, your phobia will be cured.”
The man did not show up. His psychiatrist called him, “When are you coming?” The man replied, “I spoke to my wife about the 10 sessions and the costs. She solved the problem for me.”
The psychiatrist was surprised. “How? What did she do?” he asked. The man said, “She took a saw and cut off the four legs of the bed.”
A phobia is the fear of what does not exist. The Bible speaks of such fear for those who do not know or trust God. They imagine objects of fear and worry needlessly. “But there they are, overwhelmed with dread, where there was nothing to dread….“ Psalms 53:5 NIV. Often such fears are baseless and useless.
“And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life? …Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.” Matthew 6:27, 34 ESV
