SERMON STORIES: LAUGH & LEARN
#10: STEALING APPLES
A boy was caught stealing apples from the school kitchen. He was brought to the principal’s office. “Stealing is a serious offence,” the principal said, “You could be expelled.”
The boy was sent to the chaplain who likewise warned him, “Stealing is serious sin against God. You need to pray and ask God for forgiveness.”
The boy bowed his head and prayed, “Dear God, please forgive me for taking 12 apples from the school kitchen.” The chaplain said, “But you told me you took six apples.”
The boy replied, “Yes, I did. But I have included the six I will take next week.”
Asking for forgiveness does not always mean we are truly sorry for what we have done. Remorse is feeling sorry we are caught, but repentance is turning away from what we know is wrong. Forgiveness requires, not only the confessing of wrong, but also the forsaking of it.
“Whoever conceals his transgressions will not prosper, but he who confesses and forsakes them will obtain mercy.”
- Proverbs 28:13 ESV
