#4  SWEET HOME ALABAMA
The Resilience of First Love

Does romance stand a chance when rural Alabama competes against the urban New York? Melanie (Reese Witherspoon) had married Jake (Josh Lucas), both childhood sweethearts, but she soon wanted out. Moving from countryside to city, she finds a new life with a new man, Andrew (Patrick Dempsey), the city mayor’s son. Does Jake stand a chance?

Jake refuses to sign the divorce papers to release Melanie. She hounds him till he finally gives in. A grand wedding follows, but something stops Melanie in her tracks. That’s when she hesitates and voices the memorable line, “I gave my heart to Jake and I never took it back.” She runs back to where she left her heart.

What has kept them together? We are introduced to the metaphor of love’s resilience in the opening scene when Jake and Melanie as kids saw lightning strike sand and turn it into glass. When adult Melanie left him, Jake had pursued his passion as a craftsman in glass art. Their lives have been fused together by violent heat which, while disruptive and painful, has forged them as one.

Perhaps, there is something about first love, which like first impression, never goes away.

Big Story in Bible

When Jesus wrote a letter to the Church in Ephesus, he diagnosed the otherwise healthy church with one box unchecked:

“But I have this against you, that you have abandoned the love you had at first.” Revelation 2:4 ESV

Those of us who have given our heart to Jesus, that first love can be easily lost in the competing demands for our attention and devotion. How we need to stop and remind ourselves where our heart really lies, where our real love resides. “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” Matthew 6:21 ESV
