Memorable Lines from Movies, Big Story in Bible
#5 THE MUPPETS
Knowing the Final Script
Many children grew up in the 1970s with Sesame Street, falling in love with the delightful puppet characters. How could we forget Kermit the Frog, Miss Piggy, Big Bird, Ernie and Bert? So when The Muppets came on the big screen in 2011, it was a must-see.
The plot presents an existential threat that could mean the end of the Muppets—forever! A greedy oilman is scheming to buy over the Muppet studio, tear it down to drill for oil beneath it.
In the final scene the oilman and his goons pursue the Muppets who find refuge in a warehouse—then realise they are trapped with no way out!
Above the panic and pandemonium, we see Kermit above it all, with his characteristic broad smile. He (or the puppeteer) mouths the memorable lines: “It's gonna be okay. I have read the script."
How we wish life could be like that! How wonderful if we could step out of real life, read the script, and know how things would turn out!
Big Story in Bible
Every story, whether true or fiction, is part of a big story. In The Muppets we have the classic clash between the powerful (the oilman) and the weak (the Muppets). The scriptwriter must vindicate the weak, or else readers or viewers will be infuriated.
The human desire for a just ending comes from the image of God stamped on each of us. No other ending would do. However each small story goes, the meta-story must end well. And it’s all there in God’s script in the last book of the Bible, Revelation:
“And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man. He will dwell with them, and they will be his people, and God himself will be with them as their God. He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.” Revelation 21:3-4 ESV
