Psalm 36
VISUAL AIDS IN CREATION
Your love, O LORD, reaches to the heavens, your faithfulness to the skies. (v.5)
David is given to superlatives when he spoke of God and His attributes, and who can blame him? How can we describe the love and faithfulness of God except in hyperbolic terms?
When we try to portray God and who he is, we cannot help but resort to comparisons of the greatest magnitude. So David draws upon the visual aids of skies, mountains and oceans. Yet we realize that God the creator is infinitely greater than his creation. No work of nature, however immense or majestic, can fully represent him.
I recall my visit to the Niagara Falls at the American-Canadian border. I took the ferry that brought visitors to the bottom of the falls, or at least close to it. As the ferry started its journey, the people on board donned their raincoats, took pictures and talked excitedly.
But as we neared the main falls, our conversations fell into a hush as the roar of the falls took over. Waters churned beneath us, waters fell from hundreds of feet above us, and waters everywhere drenched us. I had never felt so overwhelmed by the power and majesty of God as at those moments when we stood and stared in silent wonder at the awesome creation of God.
Similarly, the love of God comes across to us in the unending expanse of the heavens, and His faithfulness in the infinite extent of the skies. The next time we lift our eyes to the sky, or hear the sounds of the sea, may we marvel - not just at the beauty of creation - but at the wonder of our Creator and all he is to us.
Creation speaks of the Creator.
