SERMON STORIES: LAUGH & LEARN
#14: WHERE TO SIT

A lawyer arrived at an important board meeting. The chairman was still on his way, and the head of the table was vacant. “Our chairman told you to sit at the head of the table,” a board member told the lawyer.

“O no, I would never dare to sit at the place belonging to the chairman,” the lawyer protested, with feigned modesty. The board member insisted, “That’s where the chairman told you to sit.” Still, the lawyer protested. After some quibbling back and forth, another board stood up and settled the matter.

“Look here,” he said, “it does not matter where the Chairman sits. Wherever he sits, that is the head of the table.”

For those fastidious about protocol (and insecure about their status) where one sits at a meeting (or stands for a group photo), is of paramount importance. For those who are secure in their stature, it does not matter.

“Then Jesus said to the crowds and to his disciples, “The scribes and the Pharisees sit on Moses’ seat… They do all their deeds to be seen by others…and they love the place of honoUr at feasts and the best seats in the synagogues.” Matthew 23:1-2, 5-6 ESV
