SERMON STORIES: LAUGH & LEARN
#19: WHO IS OLD?
A lady returned to her hometown after many years away. She needed a medical check-up so she scrolled through a directory of medical services.
She came across a name that looked familiar. “He must be that handsome classmate of mine,” she thought, “admired by all the girls in our school.” She called and made an appointment.
On the day, she put on her prettiest dress and made sure she looked her best. But when she arrived at the clinic, she was sorely disappointed. She saw a balding and overweight man, looking old enough to be her father!
After the visit, just to be sure, she mentioned to the doctor her school and graduation year. “Of course,” he exclaimed, “I was in that class!”
“I was in that class too,” said the lady. The doctor was pleasantly surprised, and asked. “Is that so? What subject did you teach?”
So who has aged? The one who looks like her father, or the one who looks like his teacher? Those who fight age and long for youth will never win. The “young ones” will invariably become the “young once”. Better to accept aging, and embrace it. As “Desiderata” puts it so beautifully, “Take kindly the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth.”
“Gray hair is a crown of glory; it is gained in a righteous life.” Proverbs 16:31 ESV
